The Riding

Description

Bounded by Moore Avenue in the north, Avenue Road and University Avenue (to College) in the west, Don River to the east and south to the lake, Toronto Centre is home to a variety of communities including Rosedale, Cabbagetown, St. Jamestown, Regent Park, and the St. Lawrence neighbourhoods. Toronto Centre is one the most economically and demographically diverse ridings in the country.

Within blocks of each other are some of the country's wealthiest citizens; one of the largest and most diverse immigrant communities; and one of Canada's oldest social housing areas. In St. Jamestown alone, 57 different languages are spoken. In addition, Toronto Centre is home to the largest gay and lesbian community in Canada and the second largest in North America. Toronto Centre proudly boasts more co-op housing than some provinces; consequently, the issue of housing takes on the utmost importance.

Other prominent issues particular to the riding include those surrounding immigration, community safety, support for the arts, environmental protection, and the preservation of historical buildings. When one considers the numerous ethnic communities, financial institutions, social services organizations, schools, churches and hospitals to be found in this riding, it is easy to see how Toronto Centre truly represents a microcosm of what Canada has to offer and, more importantly, gives a first hand look at the challenges we face.

Community Organizations

Just as diverse as the riding itself, the organizations and agencies in Toronto Centre are representative of the rich and vibrant culture of the community. If you wish to have your organization added or removed from our list, please contact us.
